Tech question: if I have a condenser mic with an outlet for a monitoring headphone, and I plug in a headphone that has an inbuilt mic, what happens? Can secondary audio override the primary from the condenser mic, or is the secondary audio just discarded? Or do they interfere?

Headphones with inbuilt mic have a special jack (tip-ring-ring-sleeve). An audio output-only port will only have connections to tip, one ring and a long sleeve. (See fig) So any headphone mic signal will end up getting grounded if you plug it into a device that doesn't take mic.
