Like - this is a super raw ugly stupid mock I put together in two minutes. But you can imagine how it might guide you through a bunch of web pages...

Then you could imagine some exercises built in-between that aid your comprehension and retention...

Part of the problem here is that.... learning is far more aspirational than practical. People love the *idea* of learning far more than they like the hard work (and time commitment!) of *actual learning*.

But also - that's kind of the point... The trick is not to confuse content consumption with learning. No one is trying to teach "everyone" quantum computing. The trick is to make it more enjoyable and more effective for those that *do* want to learn.

I built a very very simple interactive prototype for this idea here: education-trails.glitch.me hopefully "works" on mobile and desktop to illustrate the concept. Yes it breaks in lots of ways but just to get the feel. Thoughts?

Has an example exercise built in for reflection and to ensure the learning sticks:

BTW - no idea where I'm going with this. Just fucking around. This approach definitely feels heavy handed - too "guided". Hmm.

If you get serious about building this, we should chat. I spent ~4 years building basically this with a team of half a dozen people, and got quite far with all the feature ideas you’re thinking about. Made most of the mistakes it’s possible to make 😂

I'm..... not very serious. At least not yet. I think this "guided" approach is an evolutionary dead end. Trying to play around to discover a better paradigm.

50% of the idea definitely is an evolutionary dead end. The trick is figuring out which 50%.

I think a guided approach could work in the same way a drip campaign does. The different here is creating a “place” this could exist on the web (vs their inbox) that maps to where the user is at, and perhaps only lets them see the step they’re on vs. everything at once.

Hmm. This "systems" approach is definitely interesting. Helps make the learning legible *for the student*.
The guided approach makes the learning legible *for the teacher*...

We’re working in this space at egghead. We’ve only focused on video so far, but the basic premise is to combine what we already do well with text, interactive exercises, assessment, and spaced repetition into a “learning graph” for web developers.

Nice! Sounds like you have a lot of the boxes being ticked. I think spaced repetition is especially key.
