Seems like spectacular sporting events are often the earliest memories of a historical consciousness forming for people. Makes sense. Highly visual, iconic figures, simple competitive plots, plenty of pageantry and symbolism to imprint on.

Two types of history: collective and personal/family. Earliest memories are typically of family history. For me: Collective: The 1971 war. We went down to see the trenches. Sirens and blackouts after. Personal: My brother being brought from the hospital after birth.
