Multilingualism is vastly overrated/overvalued, but *multicultural experience* (having lived long periods in very different cultures) is vastly underrated/undervalued.
It’s better to have lived in 2 places knowing only the language of 1 than in 1 place knowing languages of 2.

That’s why I’m an unrepentant globalist. I frankly have some contempt for people who have the opportunity/resources to experience more than 1 culture but *choose* not to (agnostic sympathy for those without the opportunity).

100% agree. And I’d say for significant benefit, you cannot spend your social life cosseted within an enclave of your co-nationals, you probably need to spend at least a year, and the culture should be different enough that you start out at least somewhat uncomfortable.
