IIRC, lots of simulations show that free-riding usually caps at something really really low (~10%) to be effective. Too many free riders and the group you are free-riding off of is hurt. Ie there is an optimal, and very low, amount of parasites.

two main modes of free riding today as I see it: free riding that's a grift (abuse of assistance programs by wealthy) and free riding that's stupidity (wealth redistribution through purely the market)

Couple that with the fact that so many jobs are “bullshit jobs” (see: David Graeber), you start to see how the economy is work for work’s sake. The “free rider” problem is a false neoliberal construction

Modern civilization is moving the abstraction level. Individual people are now cells in a superorganism. They are being selected based on how well their dynamic balance benefits the superorganism. Individual results don't matter.
