A lot more people are spending a lot more time thinking now than in the past (mostly involuntarily and not well). An obvious effect of living in an information abundant digital environment with more and more physical work becoming automated. Yet it somehow doesn’t seem obvious.

We’re approximate brains in vats now. What do you expect when you take approximate universal Turing machines and immerse them in high information flows every waking minute. They’re going to think more to keep up. Just like a body put on a stairmaster will climb more.
