Agreed that these bits are under-theorized, but markets often enable that selective inconvenience, no? I get to spend time writing notes in a paper journal or whatever inconvenience I perceive as beneficial because someone else handles e.g. inconveniences of growing my food

So we're always building a kind of ladder of new inconveniences to spend time on. An anti-hedonic treadmill of sorts

It may be the case that all abstractly specified personal goals are in some sense "fake," even if we take them to be real and meaningful. They're certainly useful in some regimes, real drivers of behavior.

This thread sorta reminds me of Bernard Suites' The Grasshopper... related to how humans play games, which has no intrinsic use and produces nothing, and what that means philosophically.
