Feels like there will be an abundance-induced scarcity here somewhere - some people will be satisfied to see themselves represented, but the other 90% is that they want everyone else to see it, too

Wanting 7.5 billion people to acknowledge your existence via association with a universally appealing character you identify with as narrowly as possible... seems prima facie unreasonable to me.

Being able to take all white male casts and use AI & CGI to create variations that satiate diverse markets while not actually employing diverse people is extremely problematic. It would be “near zero marginal cost” to the studios at the expense of already marginalized people.

Start with AI actors like they’re already starting to do in Japan

Would that approach customize the narrative as well to create plausible and relevant characters with the chosen attributes?

Sure. We’ll get there eventually. AlphaGo will probably learn to generate stories fitting arbitrary parameters soon.

True, same with songs. People would still be offended though I bet.

I think calls for representation are often not just about wanting to personally see the groups you're a member of represented, but also wanting to make everyone else see them too. Customisation doesn't achieve this. (Note: I'm not saying this is necessarily a bad thing to want!)
