If AI and CGI were good enough you could make as many versions of the Captain Marvel movie as people wanted at near zero marginal cost: male, female, black, white, gay, straight... A representation problem turned into a customization problem

I think calls for representation are often not just about wanting to personally see the groups you're a member of represented, but also wanting to make everyone else see them too. Customisation doesn't achieve this. (Note: I'm not saying this is necessarily a bad thing to want!)

There's an inversion of control issue though. To choose a variant is akin to tickling your own foot. It's just not the same.

I suspect it will be chosen for you based on demographic data in much the same way that many CGI movies edit out and replace characters and tropes that reflect localized cultural norms. The idea with these new deepfake things is that it could potentially be done in real time.
