Older people are not shy about telling you about how you’ll physically slow down and degenerate in a 100 little ways as you age, but they’re very coy about admitting that you also get mentally slower, duller, and less imaginative. Some mix of denial and genuine fear I suppose.

Being mentally slower and duller means they don’t know they are getting mentally slower and duller, and being less imaginative is frequently misread as coyness.

Unless they have average memories of sharper times. I definitely remember being at least 50% sharper and faster. Experience has just barely allowed me to make up for that.
Is it possible you're distracted by your expertise and memories and that this distraction makes you feel slower and less sharp in many situations? (distracted being a mental state rather than a medical one)
