+1 for firebase. Firestore is a nice abstraction over Google cloud datastore at the same cost. One more level up, Google drive actually has an API. Store any file there and use sheets as database tables. Apps scripts act like custom triggers as well.

I'm convinced that Google drive is one of the best ways to quickly build an app at low cost. You can create a Google form that becomes a form data post request and dumps responses into a Google sheet.
