This is actually overall an argument against books and for shorter forms. Essays are not just easier to fact-check after, they’re easier to test while writing (more people are willing to provide feedback at essay scale) and correct quickly and transparently once published.

Perhaps. But I've followed follow RetractionWatch long enough to know that bullshit persists. What's salient to me is that something has changed in the way scholarship is vetted through cultural filters. I think the contrast between Bellesiles and MacLean is instructive.
