I don’t think so. Seems to be more than just fun shorthand for a lot of people. At least a dark aesthetic.
I'm one of those that take it much more seriously. (Well, as seriously as any model call be taken.)
It's reminiscent of Hofstadter's spiel in "I am a strange loop" about the Nation of France, as an entity, perceiving itself.

I can understand those who dismiss it as simple emergence; a murmuration of basic human economics at scale. But at some point in one's study of ant colonies, you figure out that externalized phenotypes operate on different timescales than individuals, and have a life of their own
