My (idiosyncratic!) reading of On the Genealogy of Morals is as a transition from virtue ethics to rule-based ethics as society grows more complex. One could interpret these sorts of "become good" phrases as a nostalgia for virtue ethics? 1/

This suggests the driving force is not "everyone should be good" so much as "why does ethics have to be so complicated? everyone should just do what I think they should do". And I suspect that IS what is going on, an attempt to deny complexity and the reasons of "bad" people. //
