I have an allergic reaction to aspirationalism, no matter the context or source. If someone tells me to "do better" or "become good", ironically or sincerely, my instant reaction is to start thinking of ways to do worse by the standards the person has in mind. Not a beast to feed

What happens when it’s applied in reverse? When you’re sincerely encouraged to do the opposite? Is there a reverse psychology that kicks in?

Interesting question. I don't think I've ever been in that situation... I guess that maps to some sort of temptation like drugs or whatever. That doesn't trigger any knee-jerk reactions for me. I say yes/no depending on the content of it. Temptations tend to be more contentful.
