What am I missing with the Huawei thing? It feels like I'm catching glimpses of subplots of a story with the main story being hidden. Like watching only Thor and Ant-Man movies and not knowing about the trunk Avengers narrative or Thanos.

Uhh... the "US" is not a monolithic entity that "wants" things... unless you mean very specific factions within the government/political establishment.

There's the offer-you-can't-refuse/5G global tech/econ domination story & the espionage/surveillance story that feed each other. Other dimensions are will US allies' loyalty be diluted(end of 5 Eyes?)?;to what degree Huawei is state-controlled?; sunsetting of US-China frenemy era

My read is that DoD cant easily intercept huawei packages and install spying hardware/software without the chinese spying hardware/software realizing it. Us had a monopoly on that for a long Time and is trying to protect that.

Our NatSec types want to hem in People’s Liberation Army surveillance, hacking etc, and reining in Huawei reduces opportunities for PLA to do everyday spying. (Any) actual Huawei culpability is secret but we have a natural alliance now betw NSA and Trump Admin, so Cold War it is!
