Always order the top item of whichever menu section you're choosing from. What restaurant owner wouldn't put her/his most delicious item right up top?

Anything that would take me all day to make gets bumped to top. Anything that I can cook myself for less gets moved to the bottom. There are exceptions, but this is the rubric I use mostly.

@tylercowen has good advice--if you're going to a good restaurant, try the worst-sounding dish on the menu.
