Listening for needs/pain points/gaps. e.g. as a part of customer development, where understanding pain points provides a Why of purpose to build around. In science, the process of natural selection. Responding to selection forces is form of answering why.

Reflection. I think when I spend time figuring out why, it's something like a combination of: -failure analysis for recurring problems -ranking problems by how drastic outcome is if unfixed, and how much of my time is spent on them -scan of environment for opportunities

Also: -imagining "What do I want?" "What would be more fun?" "What would make this better?" and doing a diff on that and "What is happening now?" (usually there are differences) -what would open up more opportunities and capabilities if I complete it? -who could I learn from?
