I’m moving the breaking smart list to substack this week. There will be broken links galore, which I may or may not ever get around to fixing. Main immediate reason: substack is free while mailchimp is now costing me $90/mo.

I'm not with you. Why should MailChimp send 10,000 emails a month for you for free? Your choice is perfectly legitimate, but I don't see what MailChimp did wrong. Campaign Monitor never had a free tier. Are they bad too?

They're doing absolutely nothing wrong. I still like them. They're a great company if what you want to do is run a marketing newsletter.

Righto! But you said they're "on the wrong side". Of what?

Technology history. Their architectural approach is wrong for the way the web is evolving I think. They are managing the business side of their house fine.

Noted! Thought you were looking for a free lunch. On another note, if you have an audience of 10,000 people who specifically want to hear from you, that's good news! Go go go.

I never say no to an actual free lunch either, but substack seems to want to make money in ways (taking a cut on paid newsletters) that are friendlier to my goals as well, so I'm on board.

Well, you find yourself in Vienna anytime soon and I’ll buy you lunch ;-) And alignment is a good thing. Sounds like a good idea.
