Is a pure walled-garden social internet without unincorporated non-platform virtual space worth participating in? If I didn't have a home blog and only had platform accounts (FB, twitter, etc) I don't think I'd bother being online beyond a simple biography page.

They're better than the highly social-algorithmic platforms (Medium) because they don't hook you into particular social graphs in a specific way. They just simplify the previous generation of mailing tech (Mailchimp).
