Is a pure walled-garden social internet without unincorporated non-platform virtual space worth participating in? If I didn't have a home blog and only had platform accounts (FB, twitter, etc) I don't think I'd bother being online beyond a simple biography page.

Building your own website on a platform layer that's below "social" is a way to maintain political independence. If you live above the "social" layer, you're basically algorithm food. It's the Gemeinschaft equivalent of "below the API".

It's one thing on social platforms (including email) for distribution. Quite another to rely on them for existence.

Medium for example is above the social because it exists on top of a distribution channel owned by a particular company. A self-hosted wordpress blog need not do that.
