Is a pure walled-garden social internet without unincorporated non-platform virtual space worth participating in? If I didn't have a home blog and only had platform accounts (FB, twitter, etc) I don't think I'd bother being online beyond a simple biography page.

Building your own website on a platform layer that's below "social" is a way to maintain political independence. If you live above the "social" layer, you're basically algorithm food. It's the Gemeinschaft equivalent of "below the API".

It's one thing on social platforms (including email) for distribution. Quite another to rely on them for existence.

They're better than the highly social-algorithmic platforms (Medium) because they don't hook you into particular social graphs in a specific way. They just simplify the previous generation of mailing tech (Mailchimp).
