“Don’t think about it” is the secret to enjoying science fiction. Leave the belief + i*unbelief cat in the box. You don’t need suspension of disbelief you need resistance to looking too closely. Interesting how Rick and Morty went meta reductio-ad-absurdum on that one

William Gibson warned against the "clomping foot of nerdism", IIRC, and I think that this is partly what he was talking about. Detailed world-building. The hunt for verisimilitude can really wreck your experience. But then again, that is exactly what some fans want.

1) Yes, but never put it on the reader. I, the reader, need something in the story that compels me not to look to closely. Looking closely is a sign I'm unimpressed with the rest. 2) Unless it's "NASA porn" eg Seveneves, The Martian
