Much of what passes for contrarian now is fairly conventional opinions packaged inside an aggrieved, axe-grindey beef-seeking missile attitude. Your opinion merely bring a minority opinion does not make it contrarian. Even mainstream opinions are <50% these days

Conversely even the most contrarian takes pass unnoticed if you don’t get all theatrical or beef-seeking and fite-me-irl about them. For eg. I champion mediocrity and magical thinking now but nobody calls me contrarian because I’m very nice about it

People don't pick up on the contrarian part unless you specify and emphasize the tradeoff every time you make a point. Ideally, object-level discussion and explicit "X is better than Y." Doesn't compute if you just speak in favor of X or talk about X vs. Y in abstract.

Yeah X has to pick a beef with Y. Tyler Cowen has a good post about that.https://marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevolution/2015/08/what-kind-of-blog-post-produces-the-most-comments.html …
