Much of what passes for contrarian now is fairly conventional opinions packaged inside an aggrieved, axe-grindey beef-seeking missile attitude.
Your opinion merely bring a minority opinion does not make it contrarian. Even mainstream opinions are <50% these days

People don't pick up on the contrarian part unless you specify and emphasize the tradeoff every time you make a point. Ideally, object-level discussion and explicit "X is better than Y." Doesn't compute if you just speak in favor of X or talk about X vs. Y in abstract.

Agreed. Perhaps those who hold the true contrarian opinions are members of out-groups disregarded.
Any such member trying to become a member of the elite would keep their opinions close

This is a true observation afaict but seems to be less about contrarianism and more about getting attention. In other words people are still legitimately contrarian but nobody cares anymore.
