Much of what passes for contrarian now is fairly conventional opinions packaged inside an aggrieved, axe-grindey beef-seeking missile attitude. Your opinion merely bring a minority opinion does not make it contrarian. Even mainstream opinions are <50% these days

So if I want folks to stop and think about Upper atmosphere Carbon emissions of RocketBroism. I need to refactor my identity into a Beef with Musk seeking missile? C'mon I'm just a wimpy brown man with a Twitter account.

Agreed. Perhaps those who hold the true contrarian opinions are members of out-groups disregarded. Any such member trying to become a member of the elite would keep their opinions close

People don't pick up on the contrarian part unless you specify and emphasize the tradeoff every time you make a point. Ideally, object-level discussion and explicit "X is better than Y." Doesn't compute if you just speak in favor of X or talk about X vs. Y in abstract.

Yeah X has to pick a beef with Y. Tyler Cowen has a good post about that.https://marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevolution/2015/08/what-kind-of-blog-post-produces-the-most-comments.html …

This is a true observation afaict but seems to be less about contrarianism and more about getting attention. In other words people are still legitimately contrarian but nobody cares anymore.
