You COULD say these tasks are complete, no need for them any more; but the trainspotters and birdwatchers live on in the Anglo world. Less so, I think, in Europe. Less so still in Japan, though a few alternatives exist there. 2/

Actually, in my experience, middle classes in 2nd-world countries are heavily into this stuff and really devoted to these hobbies as identity. Indonesia, Mexico, Brazil, Peru, Ukraine spring to mind.
