There’s a creepy dimension to domestic cozy. It’s creepy in the sense of gingerbread house in Hansel and Gretel, except the kids trade places with the old witch. Children of the corn playing house. Cozy in the murder mystery sense relies on something like this to induce horror.

It's maybe why brutalist architecture got so popular. People felt more comfortable with surroundings that reflected their existential angst.

I counter this with the dinner table scenes in Firefly. Domestic cozy among pirates and refugees. Not creepy. Maybe my favorite moments in sci-fi.
