Founder of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud (born 6 May 1856) was nominated for 12 years for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Freud got 33 nominations. In 1929, the Nobel Committee for Medicine came to the conclusion that Freud's work was of no proven scientific value.

Possibly the most famous example of bad ideas pulled out of ass (ahem) catching on because of emotional appeal and quack grifting usefulness. Psychoanalysis being a quack grift on par with essential oils, of course.
