Furthering your anology - the reason a sailing vessel moves faster than the prevailing wind in a certain direction, is the current. Metaphor for hidden/unseen force/effect?

No it’s not the current. It’s the physics of sailing against the wind at particular angles.

How does one get a read on how fast the hivemind is thinking?

I like the sailing analogy. The hive mind is the wind, it isn't concerned with moving between specific points, it's just an overwhelming force moving in a general direction.

Some big boats can never tac to catch your skiff. But some tankers will envelop you unless you steer well clear early. Your memes will evolve at your rate. Always faster locally. Never contextually predictable globally.

Both. You can move faster than the hive mind along a single bandwidth, but the culminated bandwidth of the collective means the volume of thought is greater. Faster=covering distance vs faster=moving volume.

Impulsive answer: Yes. You’re talking about the maturation of an idea through bouncing off others. I think it depends on the resonance you’re getting in return (and that is also dependent on how many frequencies YOU are sensitive to).

I think the first question is "Can someone still have agency in a hivemind?"
