This is my conversational account. For my work follow @ribbonfarm, @breaking_smart, @artofgig. Tweets are 90% vacuous views, apathetically held. Mediocritopian.

What are some things people don’t expect you to understand (based on your education, background what people assume about you, etc) but you do? Test: people seem genuinely surprised when you demonstrate said understanding. Question inspired by inverse Kevin Simler question.

Hmm this is a harder question than it sounded like in my head. I got nothing. I don’t think I’ve surprised anyone thus way in a long time. I must be pretty wysiwyg. Or they hide their surprise.

Sure I do. I expect a lot of women get underestimated on tech stuff for eg.

First hand experience of explicit racism as the receiving/lower status party. Familiarity with code switching, distrust of law enforcement, etc as a byproduct.

Probably various results of growing up in the south. The most dramatic specific example I can think of offhand is that I really don't mind eating at many of the suburban restaurant chains, but I don't say anything when/if I'm around people making fun of them.
