To the extent undistracted deep work is a well-posed concept at all, the biggest disruptor of it is not social media but the need to make money. Every waldenponding evangelist I know is rich enough or securely-incomed enough to not be distracted by money-making.

For all but the poorest “making money” is not a very good explanation. “Seeking higher status” is better. And clarifies that there will be no end, no matter how much money is made, as long as money can be converted into status...

Agreed. There's a reason that the high priest of deep work is a university professor - difficult to think of a job more tailored for removing the problem of paying the bills from everyday activities.

That wealth also insulates you from being needed all of the time. If your family and friends are in similar economic situations, then it's not a big deal turning your phone off for two weeks.
