Is there a good book about secret societies? Especially with a global scope? European and Middle Eastern ones seem to be best known, but I suspect East Asian ones likely did many interestingly different things.
Also, broad distinction to be made between violent and peaceful ones

Temporary Autonomous Zone, Hakim Bey. Broad, broad coverage, but you have to read in between the lines.

“Among the Thugs” by Bill Buford (English soccer hooligans). A stretch but seems to fit. Awesome book.

Don’t have a book for you but there’s really interesting history to read about secret religious societies in the run up to 1949 in China, when they provided food and medical care for large numbers of members, and the aftermath of the Party trying to suppress them

Don't know a good general book (too much conspiracy theory trash out there) but this recent one about Acéphale, a secret society of French intellectuals between the wars is fascinating: amazon.com/Sacred-Conspir Somehow seems very relevant to the current times.
