I'm still wary of using simplistic metrics like number of words written.

Absolutely agree, but there is a point in seeing this metric as manifestation of some force in a complex system. Not precise enough to use it for mathematical operations, but acceptable for a rough overview.

Word count is like space/time, a particularly fertile variable on which so much else depends that solving for word count (tastefully) pushes everything else in the right direction. I wrote about this here
