Hmm. This is more cluelessness than amateurishness. A lack of taste in discerning what's actually important/basic combined with an eagerness to belong that tempts them into overweighting visible signifiers over invisible essentials. Premium mediocre is the ironic slacker version.

There is another segment to the “amateur” that isn’t part of this. I know many vinyl collector hobos w/ seemingly infinite taste in the history of recorded music. They remind me of the amateur star gazing (and otherwise v bored) clergy pre-20th C. They exist in weird niches.
