I've been trying to ditch shoes altogether more personally but it has gotten harder to find good minimal shoes, it's become a special order thing

Serious runners know that minimalism is a training tool (like a deadlift or a long run) not a lifestyle. Minimalist/BF running should be used strategically to accomplish specific goals (economy, strength). Be 'Barefoot Jason' if you want but it ain't helping you race faster.

Brands like Hoka and Altra stole their thunder by taking the zero drop of minimalist shoes and adding maximalist cushioning for everyone that was getting injured in barefoot shoes.

Ha yes I went direct from vibram five fingers to hola one one - turns out the problem I had with running wasn’t too much shoe, but not enough

I think people gradually realized the claims around barefoot running were overstated. Then Vibram lost a big class action suit a few years ago for misleading marketing. Seems like a decent number of people still use the shoes though (myself included).

Seems like there was also a weird, opposite fad towards extra cushioned shoes as the barefoot thing died down.
