This thread gets at one of the reasons I’ve veered away from the model. Unlike Alexandra I don’t think you can just assert “the audience is not your boss” and hope it ends there. To displace a default mental model you need a more persuasive one. So far nobody’s come up with one.

I did experiment with the model for a few years, but stopped when I realized a few bad-apple “sponsors” were bringing toxic expectations/entitlements to the party that were a way bigger cost to counter than the $ contributed by ALL sponsors (who were 95% excellent).

Rule of thumb: if you don’t have the bandwidth to make a sponsor at least a casual friend, don’t take the money. Sell a finished creative product instead. Selling a $3 ebook is MUCH healthier than taking a $3 tip in a tip jar with ambiguous expectations attached.
