State of trying to update website building skills for the first time since 2009 1. Trying to do simple table-like layouts using divs/css is a Mars mission. I give up. 2. Did a hello-world in Gatsby. Going beyond basics is like going to Moon. I give up. 3. Gutenberg is gut.

Just use jekyll to build the site (I'm assuming you want to move to static from dynamic) and then host it wherever. I've found that to be the most straightforward. But still has a non-zero learning curve.

yeah jekyll is on my list to experiment with next

For years web developers were made fun of because making a web site "wasn't exactly rocket science". Their response: OK, how about now?

Yup layout is very hard. You can still use tables if you like. But yeah any website that doesn’t look like the 90s was made by a dev struggling with css layout. Every time someone achieved something beautiful and amazing - that became standard and we all cried. However: flexbox.
Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

"Websites" or "web-apps" these days need to adapt to screens of different widths : TVs, laptops, tablets and phones. You don't want to be working with 2d ... a 1d abstraction that automatically adapts is more suitable.

I like my webapps like I like my chess: 4D.
