One reason why mediocrity is often a panacea for social ills is because those ills are often rooted in a belief in perfectibility. It counterprograms ills that manifest as either extreme sociability or extreme individualism by diluting the fervor of both tendencies down to “Meh”

Yeah, the big turning to point for me was when I decided I couldn't ever really predict whether something I'd do would work out or be meaningful in any particular way but I could pretty easily optimize for fun/interesting.

“Meaningful” in our times is synonymous with “big” because the main survival feature is simply drowning out the noise long enough to hold the attention of a few strangers for longer than a few days.
