But we're not all highly skilled technicians, so we can't assess the half-assedness of complex systems. It's possible that we're all half-assing everything, but we're deeply embedded in our systems so no one really knows.

You'll be surprised at the amount of half-assing (jugaad?) that's done during the construction of high-rises. Plans don't necessarily map to implemented reality. Lucky that factors of safety are kept large.

Also, some scary (undesigned) holes in structurally important members of airplanes have been observed. Ostensibly to pass cables through for control systems.
