Why is citizen political action in the US so tied to people calling congress members' offices? Seems like an artifact of an odd influence protocol

right and there's actually quite an ornate protocol to it: you can only call your own rep; you have to give your name and address (or at least zip code?) and tell them specifically that you support or oppose whatever initiative, and if you don't do that they won't count you

…but you can bet for every constituent who follows the script, there's N incoherent screamers

If you’re interested in changing the way things work in your city, county, state, or the nation, you tell your rep what you believe & how yo’d like them to vote on an issue at whatever level the issue resides. If there’s a “currency” it’s the person’s vote.

it seems that an elected representative in the US will vote however they please unless there are enough constituents urging at them in a very specific kabuki-esque way to vote otherwise
