Why are hashtags such a strong signal of low quality? Every hashtag on a tweet dramatically drops its credibilityhttps://twitter.com/vgr/status/1112485492862255104 …

Old guy here, I shouldn't use hashtags? They're quite effective tho on Instagram? What am I not understanding, don't they make your content easier to find, what's the harm?

I think this applies in an extreme example to the Chinese use of homophones and look-alikes to ironically get around censorship (like comparing Xi to Winnie the Poo)https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/aug/07/china-bans-winnie-the-pooh-film-to-stop-comparisons-to-president-xi …

credibility distributions are a bit platform-dependent, but mediocre actors are everywhere... While I think of twitter and linkedin as 20/80, instagram seems closer to 50/50.

This applies 90% of the time. Distinctive/timely hashtags are less a signal of low credibility and more about providing context to the tweet.
