When did people start saying "fam"? Urban dictionary has an entry dated 2003, but I think I really only started hearing it a lot after 2013-14 or so... was I just late to notice or is there an evolutionary story there?

You are extremely late.
“Fam” was widespread in mainstream hip-hop lyrics throughout the 1990s.
I’ll add examples to this thread as they come to me…1 reply 0 retweets 2 likes -

Ah so my exposure is more white than late I think...? I don't really listen to music or follow music trends, but I started hearing my younger millennial white friends use it only a few years back. Sounds like it crossed over fully from black culture to white more recently.

Fam as an abbreviation for family is old. I think it's the use of fam in singular direct address that's more recent. I first heard that form in the mid-2000s; it became widespread w/ the barbershop meme.
