People over 40: When did you *first* buy a cellphone? Anyone here among the customers of the first 1G cellphones circa 1983?

About 2000-2001. I recall having a pager in 1999 but not later

Interesting... were pagers ever common outside doctors and other on-call people?

It was weird in the 90's as Europeans all had phones, yet no-one Hollywood films had them.

The 1G story is odd since it started in the US, then went to Israel, Australia... I think Europe took the lead with 2G if I'm not mistaken

1996,97 I think - hybrid (dual) 1G-2G Nokia, AT&T service in US.
Most areas in cities had 2G (TDMA), but many highways, rural areas and some parts in cities were on legacy 1G (analog).

1999 Nokia AT&T Maharashtra ( Later became Idea) . That model was epitome of durability. Dropped in water but came bk full after full dry treatment ( like keeping it immersed in dry rice grain). Life was so easy then.
