I have this vague itch to build a series of clocks as a hobby, but *without* a modern clock for reference. Eg build a mechanical clock, but use an hour glass to cal9brate first run. Bootstrap time all the way to atomic.

I actually want to build a clock that just doesn’t have to be set. Like what would a luxury clock look like in this day and age? Also I wanted to use NTP

I think you can buy clocks that self-set to NIST signals.
NTP clock shouldn’t be hard. RPi running a small program?

The Gingery series explains how to build a modern metal working show from scratch. gingerybookstore.com/cgi-bin/sc/ss_
FYI, the way to bootstrap a straight edge from scratch is to rub three almost-straight edges against each other. Maybe there are time analogies.

"bootstrap all the way to atomic" sounds like a generally useful life goal.
