In a confused but non-violent melee where most people around you are in brownian motion, effective behaviors look like: a) carry a flag b) head in a fixed direction, no clever maneuvering c) move forward at every opportunity d) never take a backward step.
Conversation
It works because people will start to get behind *any* visibly consistent movement, just to get relief from random-walk melee. This irresistibly compounds forward momentum. The more people there are behind you trying to go the same way, the easier it gets. Reverse drafting.

True North is a self-fulfilling prophecy. You just have to Stan for Stanning. The actual direction doesn’t matter. You just have to develop the backing momentum so you move faster than sqrt(number of steps) in *any* direction.
Being direction agnostic (ie mercenary) helps.

This is similar to the observation that sometimes to impress the confused, only confidence is enough.
