Whole foods makes sense, whole plants is just odd usage since the first interpretation is your joke one... bark and pits and crap
'whole plants' usually refers to unprocessed i.e. where nutrients haven't been artificially removed or added. e.g. olive oil is a plant food but not whole. as long as the meaning is understood we're all on the same page :)

olives are a rough case because processing is necessary to remove oleuropein right? can’t eat fresh olives
