Letter of the law = don't read material about business matters; spirt of the law = try to stick to reading material directly or indirectly about spiritual matters. Many Orthodox Jews outside of the Charedi sphere are not particularly strict about the latter.

The rabbinical answer I got as a kid: Work is work is work. You can’t cheat god. It’s a time to be connected to people and food and to relax. Reading and writing are forbidden.

Can you do house work? What an amazing concept. My Protestant upbringing worshipped work no matter what day it was.
