TIL about NetMap. Seems to be a Christopher Alexander angle too, of potential interest to and laetusinpraesens.org/docs00s/netmap

I'm surprised that 10+ years later there isn't a better open source successor in the network analysis/visualization space. Have you seen other projects along these lines?

apparently the gephi people are redoing it in JS

Really? That sounds interesting. Do you know who’s working on it? Is there a website or anything?

I think I played with gephi or something very like it a few years back. I find that graph viz tools in general don't work for me... they're too one-size fits all. What I really need is a tool that allows me to embed the visualization on a plane with some meaningful semantics.

ie, even though it's a bit of an overconstrained problem, I'd like some control over (x, y) besides edge weights. Like for example, give each vertex a desired (x,y) based on some meaning, like say the political compass 2x2... and then the viz does a best fit after clustering etc.
that kind of thing smells more like a multiple correspondence analysis ie matrix thing rather than graph
