I think I played with gephi or something very like it a few years back. I find that graph viz tools in general don't work for me... they're too one-size fits all. What I really need is a tool that allows me to embed the visualization on a plane with some meaningful semantics.
ie, even though it's a bit of an overconstrained problem, I'd like some control over (x, y) besides edge weights. Like for example, give each vertex a desired (x,y) based on some meaning, like say the political compass 2x2... and then the viz does a best fit after clustering etc.
that kind of thing smells more like a multiple correspondence analysis ie matrix thing rather than graph
