The meaning of the “Alexander wept because there were no more worlds to conquer” seems to change wildly depending on what specific historical context you assume.

The currently quoted form seems to come from Hans Gruber line in Die Hard and assumes end-of-campaign context (which would be odd since he’d only conquered a fraction of the world he knew existed then). This early career context makes more sense but means something different.
