Aging not fun. Not recommended. 2.5 stars. Don't do it. When you see 40 approaching over the horizon, just say no, turn around, and walk straight back to 30. You'll thank me later.

Feature, not a bug Beyond a point of complexity, complex systems need to be designed (or evolve) to be made out of mortal parts. Immortal parts are a kind of arrested development. We don't know yet what natural lifespan for the human body design is, but it's not infinite

Why not infinite? And although natural evolution does indeed require mortality, can't we move on to artificial evolution by now ?

People don’t seem to truly understand numbers. 120 years << 10,000 years 10,000 years << 100m years 100m years << infinite There are qualitative differences between each involving resolving divarication tendencies of complex systems.

Major variable is distribution of finite resources - easier to see how little we have on extended lifespan Small immortal population - easy to maintain Global immortal population would neccesitate global asceticism to maintain Forest or trees?

call me cynical - can bioimmortality reasonably be distributed, or will it lead to greater class divide? Dichotomous, but difficult to see alternative possibilities as likely.

There is probably a good reason no species has evolved to have an indefinite natural lifespan. Despite obvious evolutionary advantages.

It's a feature only on the species level though. As Paul Graham says - the fact that mosquitoes as a species is quite robust would be no solace for the individual mosquito.

Our bodies repair themselves: we're "immortal" until the end of our peak reproductive years. Aging isn't a "feature". It's just natural selection tapering off once you're past the age where most folks have kids.

I'll second the feature-not-a-bug camp. But my reasoning is more about the ability of the species to change and adapt. Things that seem crazy, repulsive, or weird to old people are just normal for the young. Managing immortality is going to be very, very hard.
